What better place for Mr & Mrs White to spend their anniversary but in the WHITE Mountains - this was no coincidence.
Not a very early departure, but we took the scenic route around Jackson before stopping at "Yesterdays" for breakfast - Pancakes. I do like my American Pancakes.
Took Route 16 down to Conway which delayed us as it was very busy and traffic lights held everyone up. Val had read that Pequawket Pond had peaked (in terms of fall foliage) so we hunted that out, eventually, before continuing of foliage trail:
The plan at this point was to get petrol and go over Bear Notch Pass but there was no petrol station at the (relatively large) town of Bartlett. So we asked at what was the petrol station - everything but pumps - and we were directed 12 miles down the road. We made the 12 mile out and 12 mile back diversion before going over Bear Notch Pass which brings us back onto the Kancamagus. Highway where we retrace some steps - again the old story of it looking different the other way - to the main road.
On the way back we investigated some option for good views tomorrow before returning to the hotel after dark.
Dinner at the Eagle Mountain Hotel was to have been something special but
sadly it wasn't.
Andrew has his traditional steak, or what was steak after the third of it that
was fat was cut off.
Val had venison, grossly undercooked and had to be returned resulting in us not
actually eating at the same time.
Vegetables were cold, too. Service was poor and the waitress was totally
disinterested in any problems.
The tip (16%) was already added onto the bill which probably explains the poor
service - "The tip's the same whether you work hard or not".
It has been a tiring day and after a brief walk around the hotel and grounds (car park) we crashed out.
