Bartholomew

">

Our first full day began with a morning visit to Bartholomew Island. This is a very small Island and the whole boat load is not allowed on it at the same time. So three groups go on for the trail while the other three have a panga ride around the rocks and inlets of the shore.

The ride gives us our first viewing of a Blue Footed Booby. Other sightings were Frigatebirds, Brown Noddies and Sally Lightfoot Crabs, though the main stars of the outing were the Galapagos Penguins.

We had a dry landing on the Island close to what was clearly a former volcano cone, now submerged

After landing it was time to take the trail  to the summit, passing a variety of cinder cones on the way before reaching the trig point at the top.

At the summit we were rewarded with the view over the island with Pinnacle Rock to the right.

Couldn't resist a photo with the pair of us up there:

The rest of the morning was spent on the (right hand) beach in the shadow of Pinnacle Rock. Some folks snorkelled/swam, but we had a look around the beach rock pools - some things to see including lava lizards and crabs including ghost crabs.

During lunch the boat sailed around the Island of Santiago (also known as James) and dropped anchor off the beach area of Puerto Egas, where we had an hour's beach time, followed by a trail.
